How I Simplified My Meal Planning

I'm just going to come right out and say it: Food is hard.

At least for me it is.

It never mattered how much I simplified or how many improvements I made to myself or my life, when it came to food I was always such a mess.

Grocery shopping was a nightmare. I didn't know what to buy, couldn't put together a meal to save my life, and I would typically leave the store with crackers, peanuts, and various cheeses.... and that was it. Well, maybe a vegetable if I was feeling particularly healthy that week.

And don't even get me started on the 2 full months I ate nothing but potato chips, sweettarts and  soda...

When I got married it got even worse. I mean, how am I supposed to feed another person when I can barely feed myself?

Why I Let Go of Minimalism

I've been pursuing minimalism for quite some time now. Just about three years!

That is probably the longest I've stuck with anything!

And it has been a wild ride!

My journey started by getting rid of almost 75% of my possessions in what I fondly refer to as the "Great Purge of 2015. I over-hauled my wardrobe and home, and found a clear path to who I am underneath all the stuff.

Minimalism Gave Me the Life of My Dreams

When I started pursing minimalism almost three years ago, I thought I was just cleaning up my house a bit. Minimalism was just going to be a way to keep myself organized and less stressed.

But that's all that was going to change, right?

I couldn't see then what it really meant to create space in your life. And I didn't understand the beautiful possibilities that open up when you create that space.

I didn't realize minimalism was going to completely change the direction of my life.

Minimalism gave me the life of my dreams.

Minimalism for the Highly Sensitive

It wasn't until recently that I discovered I'm a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP).

Ok, so I knew I was very sensitive, but I didn't know it was a thing. I had always just thought something was wrong with me.

If you're highly sensitive, too, then you know as well as I do that life can get overwhelming fast. But minimalism has been a huge help in my life in keeping down the overwhelm and allowing me to better cope with my sensitivities.

I believe, for the highly sensitive, minimalism is a must. Here's why.

Moving as a Minimalist

Through a series of absolutely unbelievable circumstances, the Mountain Man and I were able to move back to his home town and I was able to put in my two weeks notice at my day job.

When I found out we'd be moving I was so excited and really couldn't wait to get packing.

And I was so sure that this would be the easiest move either of us would ever make, since I've been downsizing for the past two years.

I was so wrong... well, partly.

Why You Need Minimalism in Your 20s

I wish I'd found minimalism sooner.

I was 26 when I first started thinking about decluttering my home and pursing a simpler life. Minimalism was a game changer and I am incredibly grateful for the way it has changed and shaped my life.

Since then, I have seen such incredible benefits of changing my lifestyle. I can only imagine how much better off I would be now if I had found minimalism in my early 20s.

There is no wrong time to start making changes in your life. It's never too late to do things differently. But looking back, there are so many benefits to embracing a simpler life earlier on.

4 Myths of Minimalism

At first glance, creating a minimalism lifestyle can seem daunting.

What's the first thing you think of? White walls, empty rooms, black and white clothes... It's easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you think you need to get rid of or replace. It's hard when you think you have to meet a certain standard.

But being a minimalist doesn't mean you have to let go of your personality.

Minimalism isn't black and white.

There are a lot of ideas of what it means to be a minimalist, and a lot of those are myths. Minimalism doesn’t have set standards or rules you have to follow. It looks different for everyone.

The Unexpected Side Effects of Minimalism

When I started pursuing minimalism a few years ago, I had some ideas of what I thought it would do to my life. I had done my research.

I'd spent weeks pouring over pictures of beautifully white and bare homes. Everything was so clean, so bright. That's what my life was going to look like. Minimalism, I thought, was the magic pill that would turn my home into a magazine spread.
